Trends in Maternal health service coverage in the Tigray region

According to the DHIS2/HMIS Report, Maternal health service coverage in the Tigray region has shown substantial improvement from 2000 to 2019, with antenatal care (ANC) increasing from 36.4% to 94%, skilled birth attendance from 4.8% to 73.3%, and institutional deliveries from 3.7% to 72.4%. While initially low, postnatal care (PNC) also improved from 10.2% in 2000 to 62.9% in 2019. However, 2024 data from Gebrehiwot et al. (2025) indicate a concerning decline in PNC coverage to 19.2%, despite ANC and skilled birth attendance remaining relatively high at 87.4% and 81%, respectively. This suggests that while access to services during pregnancy and delivery remains strong, the postnatal period remains a gap in the continuum of care—potentially due to health system disruptions in recent years.
